So you want to compete in the world of surfing? Maybe you want to be the next Kelly Slater or Rob Machado. What ever your dream may be, follow it! Some say that surf competitions take the soul out of surfing and maybe it does for some people but you know the old saying “everybody is entitled to their own opinion” How many times have you heard that? It’s unbelievable how much excitement is going through your skull right before you hear the shriek of the starting horn. After its sounded it feels like somebody just opened up the floodgates as you sprint towards the surf with anticipation. A strategy that has worked for me in the past surfing in local NSSA contests. Get 3 waves as soon as you can. Then start working on getting 3 more better then the last 3 make sure you get a few of tricks in without falling. If you still have time left in your heat what the hell, go for 3 more. NSSA has been in competitive surfing for many decades and offer all types of divisions for competition. They have contests on the East and the West Coast and also in Hawaii. Competitive surfing gives you a great feeling, even if you don’t do so well in a particular event. But when it’s all said and done isn’t fun just to hang out and surf with your friends? That is exactly what surfing in competitions is like. So unless you have already tried competing and found that it’s just not your bag give it a try hey you never know you just might like it. My favorite part of the whole competition thing is that you get to surf great spots with only 6 guys especially with all the crowds these days that is a huge plus. So wax up and hit the surf.
Check out NSSA.ORG for all the info on contest near you. Brad J Lilley competes in the Masters and the Longboard divisions in the NSSA Gold Coast Explorer.
